Effectively, a colossus of West Yorkshire, Pontefract Racecourse is one of the longest continuous flat racing circuits in Europe and measures an uninterrupted two miles and half a furlong in length with no chutes or gaps.
Certainly a demanding course by nature, you shouldn’t be fooled by its oval shape that has caught many horses out in the past; this is more for course specialists who thrive on being tested and punishing terrain.
A Historical Blueprint Encompassing Badges, Battles And Miners
Long steeped in history, the town of Pontefract was one of the key strongholds of the north during Norman times; indeed a major fortress that witnessed its fair share of events. Today, only ruins remain, yet the racecourse lingers in its ever so gradual fading shadow.
Arguably one of the events of the month; there are 16 meetings each year at Pontefract between the months of March and October and it draws its fair share of racegoers who flock to see how the undulations are handled.
However, racing began long before today; in 1790 actually and, in 1802, a brilliant crowdfunding campaign, earned those who parted with their £50, special subscriber badges that allowed them entry for free over 20 years, while the racecourse raised the funds needed with the proceeds to construct the very first grandstand.
At the time, along with Stockton, Pontefract was the only racecourse that was allowed to host events during WWII and was the substitute course for the highly ere Lincoln Handicap.
It was traditional for Pontefract to start its races late in the day with the town having proud working-class roots, many coalminers working long hours.
Drastic Alterations
In the 1980s, the course underwent a redesign, which essentially saw it expanded due to construction involving the M62 and what was once a horseshoe track, became a full oval that included many challenges.
The final three furlongs also involve a challenging endeavour, which involves a steep uphill as you turn into the last stages with this being a brutal war of attrition. Best suited for nimble and compact horses who save their energy on the descent, these appear to outperform the longer striding ones.
Major Races And Talking Points
In 1983, the track extension gave birth to the Pontefract Marathon Handicap that is run over an impressive two miles, five furlongs and 139 yards each April and proudly stands as the longest Flat handicap race in the sport’s entirety.
Although there is a distinct lack of straight track sprinting, which means that all five or six furlong dashes are run around the left-hand bend. As such, the course has high-calibre sprinters on a regular basis.
The Flying Fillies’ Stakes in August is easily the course’s most valuable contest and is one that is famously won in 2012 by Mince prior to her Group 3 ascension at Ascot. The Pomfret Stakes and The Pontefract Castle Stakes (won by the well-liked Brown Panther in 2012) are two other notable races.
In addition, the town also has a notable place in sports science equine history, due to it being the very first racecourse in England to introduce routine dope testing or horses.
